Our Reasons for Reconstructing the Pike
This project has two goals:
- Repair the deteriorating road, and
- Make Springfield Pike safer and more efficient for all users, including motorists, transit riders, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
Four-lane undivided roadways have a history of relatively high crash rates. The main issue is that the left lane is shared by higher-speed through traffic and left-turning vehicles. Road Diets reduce the number of vehicle-to-vehicle conflict points that contribute to rear-end, left-turn, and sideswipe crashes.
